San Miguel operates on three separate fronts to achieve successful results: the operation of middle schools in the Austin and Back of the Yards communities; support of its graduates through youth development activities; and support of families through adult education and clinical counseling services.

Students are accepted into San Miguel based on three main criteria: academic underperformance, financial needs, and living in proximity to the schools.
