John Conerty – Board Chair
John Conerty is originally from Woodstock, IL attended Marian Central Catholic High School and then Miami University, Oxford Ohio, he earned an athletic scholarship as a member of the football team. John has been in the Commercial Real Estate business for the past 28 years, investing the last 22 years of his career at Savills-Studley, Inc. John was introduced to San Miguel School approximately 10 years ago by fellow board member. Initially, John’s involvement with San Miguel School was mentoring individual students. He was asked to join the San Miguel School board of directors in 2012 and he became board chair in March 2013. John and his wife Kate live in Arlington Heights and they have three adult children. John’s motivation to serve is inspired by his faith and his desire to help poor, academically at-risk, inner-city children transform their lives through education, commitment and love.
David is from the Chicago suburb of Park Ridge. He benefited greatly from a Christian education at St. Andrews Lutheran School there. Upon graduation from the University of Illinois and Wharton Business School he began a career in commercial real estate. He is currently Executive Vice President at First Industrial Realty Trust. It has been his great privilege to be associated with San Miguel School for several years and serve on the board for the last three years. He and his wife have recently moved to Atlanta but maintain their ties to San Miguel because of the great results they have witnessed transforming the lives of the students.
Dr. Scott Kier
Dr. Scott Kier joined the Christian Brothers of the Midwest in June 2013 as Superintendent of Lasallian Education. Reporting to the Brother Visitor, he is responsible for the oversight of all the ministries in the district, which includes three universities, thirteen high schools, four middle schools, one elementary school, four retreat centers and two publishing houses. He is the District representative on nine Board of Directors, including San Miguel School Chicago.
Prior to taking on this leadership role in the Midwest District, he served as Dean of Students at Saint Mary’s College of California and completed his doctorate in Educational Leadership at the University of San Francisco. Originally from Buffalo, NY, he has served as the Chief Financial Officer at St. Joseph’s Collegiate High School in Buffalo, NY, as well as the Vice Principal at De La Salle Collegiate in Warren, MI. He has also successfully completed the Lasallian Leadership Institute and the Buttimer Institute of Lasallian Studies. In his spare time, he likes to cook, read, photography, watch and play many sports, as well as travel.
Margaret Farley, CND
Sr. Margaret Farley grew up in New York City. She graduated from Catholic elementary and high schools. She later earned degrees from Fordham University, the University of Dayton, and Loyola University of Chicago. She served as an educator in New York, Vermont, Connecticut and Chicago. She taught in Catholic elementary schools, was a Reading Specialist, and a school principal.
For several decades she has worked in the Office of Catholic Schools of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Presently she is Director of School Personnel. There are 217 elementary and secondary schools in the Archdiocese, the largest Catholic school system in the country; there are 75,000 students.
Sr. Margaret has been on San Miguel’s board of directors since the School’s founders launched the first board. She has played a critical role in the relationship between San Miguel School Chicago and the Archdiocese of Chicago.
Marta Ramirez Krug
Marta Krug is from the south side of Chicago. Her father is from Mexico and mother from southern Illinois. Marta’s father felt that a quality education was a sure way to achieve the American Dream. Marta attended University of Chicago and Northern Illinois University for accounting. She worked several years as CPA in public accounting at Peat Marwick specializing in manufacturing and non-profit accounting. Marta started MRK Financial Services, a firm specializing in financial solutions & consulting for small businesses and in particular, non-profit organizations. Marta and her husband Bill have dedicated many years to San Miguel, in particular, Marta was one of the founding members of San Miguel’s School Rocks concert. After getting married & having children, Marta decided to devote her time to her children and various non-profit endeavors. Marta and her family reside in Burr Ridge Illinois and are passionate about giving back.
Freddy has over 24 years of experience in the Elevator Service Industry in sales, operations and management. Today, Freddy serves as Business Development Manager of Thyssenkrupp Elevator. He enjoys helping others and giving back to the community. He is the Chair of the University of Illinois Children’s Hospital advisory board, a member of San Miguel School board and Sanai Hospital community advisory board.
Freddy chose to join the San Miguel board because of its mission and vision “to serve students who are academically at-risk and whose families are economically disadvantage” He believes that education is power and an opening to a whole new world. He received his MBA from Keller Graduate School of Management. He enjoys playing golf and working out.
Neil joined the board in July 2018. Neil serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of Jet Support Services. Prior to joining JSSI, Mr. Book served as Vice President of Mobility for Juniper Networks, directing its mobile security business unit. His role at Juniper began in 2010, in connection with their acquisition of SMobile Systems, where he had served as President and Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Book began his career at AT&T where he held various management positions. Mr. Book is a graduate of the University of Delaware, class of 1999.
Colleen joined the board in April 2018. Colleen is the immediate past Executive Director of San Miguel School Chicago. Colleen worked for the San Miguel Schools for 8 years in leadership capacities before she moved to Lewis University, another partnering Lasallian institution.
Colleen has over 12 years of experience working in the non-profit sector. She attended DePaul University as a four-year scholarship athlete, Women’s Soccer, where she obtained her bachelors in Education with an endorsement in Marketing/Communications. She has extensive experience with fundraising and non-profit leadership. Colleen also volunteers coaching soccer at San Miguel and teaching Yoga.
Rachel Mitz is the Director of Development for Equity Office. Rachel was introduced to San Miguel School in 2015. She had just finished 10 years of tutoring and mentoring and wanted to get involved with San Miguel. Since then, Rachel Mitz helped formulate the Auxiliary Board of San Miguel School. Rachel and the Auxiliary Board provided much support in their first year. Rachel joined the board of directors shortly after as the liaison between the Auxiliary Board and Board. When Rachel is not working or volunteering you can find her running marathons, working out, and catching up with friends.
